Parthenon - Ken’s Question, Algol and Alkes

Written on July 8, 2007 by Bernadette

Parthenon TN, Parthenon, AthensHullo All,

Ken – a new subscriber – asked a question when he registered to join the blog and  the long arm of coincidence is working nicely.

Ken’s question was concerning the role of the star Algol in the building of the Parthenon in Nashville TN. This is a full scale reproduction and the corner stone was laid (according to Ken) on the 8 October, 1895 and it was opened at 8.30am 1 May 1897.

I was curious and so did the parans for the two above dates and found in the parans that Algol was all over Uranus. So you scored a hit Ken :)

[Note for Starlight users: You can see this if you select Mundane Parans in Starlight but also you can see that it was also active on the day – 8 October – by opening up the normal natal parans, do a right hand mouse click on the parans and then select from the option list the “paran stars”. This opens the dialog box which allows you to alter the paran options. In paran points, click on the … button and then select “Standard” click OK. You will then see all the outer planets listed on the natal paran report. ]

So Algol with Uranus in mundane parans in Starlight is defined as:

Uranus - Public opinion, Public expectations

On Nadir when Algol is Culminating orb 00 mins 07 secs -

Rebellion, the anger of the common people

Culminating when Algol is On Nadir orb 00 mins 13 secs -

Rebellion, the anger of the common people

So Ken, Algol was sort of in an “opposition” to Uranus in that period for

Nashville, TN. as it was culminating as Uranus was on the nadir and vica versa.

But the really interesting thing for me was that Alkes was the Heliacal Rising Star given my last post.

In the natal parans for that day the meaning is:

Alkes - Rising 83 mins 22 secs before Sunrise

To be the living vessel of a sacred body of knowledge or philosophy

Which for me fits nicely with the idea of making a full scale reproduction of the original Parthenon – I have put the images in this blog for people to see the buildings.

But then I got curious and I noticed that the original Parthenon was largely destroyed on the 28 September 1687 as it was being used by the Ottoman army as an ammunition store which was ignited by Venetian bombardment. The resulting explosion severely damaged the Parthenon and its sculptures. Here are a few of the parans for that fateful day in 1687. Sorry ken no Algol present but….

 Heliacal Rising Star

Alkes -
Rising 41 mins 44 secs before Sunrise -

A cup, a chalice, a vessel be it a person, or an object, is important

Here it is again!

Heliacal Setting Star   Scheat - Setting 00 mins 27 secs before Sunrise
A time of technological breakthroughs

Sun - Setting when Zosma is Setting orb 00 mins 34 secs -
A group of people are the innocent victims of a senseless act Mars - Setting when Acubens is Rising orb 00 mins 44 secs -

Art and architecture take the focus

Mars - Rising when Alpheratz is Rising orb 01 mins 26 secs -
A time of physical recklessness or bravery - Curtailed passage

Now  Athens and Nashville are very similar in latitude. Athens is 37N59 while Nashville TN is at 36N09 – so the Heliacal Rising star for the explosion on the 28 September 1687 was Alkes, just as it was of course the Heliacal Rising star for the laying of the foundation stone 208 years later - on the 8 October, 1895. The people invovled with this would not have been aware of the link between the damage to the orginal stucture being in “rapport” with the date and place of the beginning of the building of a full scale reproduction. People have often wonder about Nashville undertaking this project, but now we can see a link between the two of place and date - lovely stuff  :)

So Ken, thank you for your question – Algol present with Uranus but what I like is the stressing of Alkes, the vessel.

Anyone else with some thoughts or other examples of boat, ships or buildings?

Ever since the post on Alkes in relation to the two maritime terrorist incidents, I have been reflecting mightily on Alkes. A recent research adventure while writing a Fixed Star Diploma assignment gave me this thought: it may be wise to consider ALL the interpretive ideas that have been associated with a star since it began to have meanings assigned to it. They’re all there.

Considering that Alkes has been posited as a begnign, gently potent, spiritual kind of star, to find it prominent in various potential and actual violent world events might seem…well…startling. But consider: Alkes, the star of the Crater, rides the back of the Serpent Hydra. It may well be a vessel carrying something for the collective (visualising Hydra as the Zeitgeist), but what is it carrying? “Something symbolically precious for others”, but is that something always sweetness and light? Even in a natal chart, I think not.

I’d be interested in reseraching the positions of this whole constellation grouping - Hydra, the Crater, Corvus - and how they appeared in the sky at the world events we’ve catalogued so far. The Hydra parallels Leo in the sky. At the time of the various happenings, is it seen to rise alongside Leo, remain under Leo, go over Leo, or what? How is the Crater positioned? Is it upright - containing, or on its side - outpouring? (I was reminded to ask this last question by a piece of old north American weather lore, that the raininess of a month could be forecast by observing the tilt of the crescent Moon in the west on the first night of its visibility.) Maybe something will come of this, maybe not. But the pontency of the visual is worth investigating.

I’m also intrigued by constellation absent from this whole discussion: Corvus. This is intriguing because of the prominence of ravens in the northern European and Native American mythologies. Or perhaps not: I’m not sure of the prevalence of ravens or crows in the regions where astrology was born and developed. In the Pacific Northwest, where I live, Raven has a tremendously important myth in our misty, cloudy, rain-soaked clime; He stole the sun from the gods for humanity - much like Prometheus stealing fire - and was punished by having His brilliant white feathers burned black. His act feels very much like Corvus plucking sacred fire - not liquid! - from the Chalice that rides the back of the Hydra.

Considered thus, the charts with a prominent Alkes that we’ve been presented in the Fixed Star Diploma course are most intriguing: Albert Einstein (whose research ultimately ’stole’ the fire of atomic energy), Lord Horatio Nelson and Joan of Arc (who were honored, first and foremost, as battle heros in critical struggles where they ’stole’ back important treasures for their Leonine masters), Mohandas Gandhi (who, although he embodied a peaceful mode of resistance, did so with the iron will of a warrior, and eventually ’stole’ the Raj back from the British).

Could it be that Corvus is a hidden key of sorts, here? Both in the mundane events and birth charts? A key to who is attempting to steal something precious? Like the hijackers? The terrorists?

Part of the film “Nashville” was filmed at the Nashville Parthenon in 1975. This segment of the film depicts an assasination of a country singer while on stage in front of the Parthenon. The director, Robert Altman, was contacted in 1980 after the shooting of John Lennon with the implication that Altman’s scene motivated the Lennon murder. Mr Altman, of course, denied any connection.

But since John Lennon had Algol conjunct his Uranus and the Parthenon has Algol opposed its Uranus, it seems a fitting connection from an astrological standpoint.

Another person I’m interested in is Harry Crosby; born June 9, 1898 in Boston and died December 10, 1929. Can someone who has starlight look up to see if Algol hits his chart?

    Hi Ken

Remember Algol is not “oppose” Uranus, but is culminating with Uranus is on the nadir.

I do not know what stars he has aligned with his Uranus, as I never work with stars by projecting them onto the ecliptic (that is a long story) .. but what is interesting is when you look at John Lennon’s fixed star parans he also has Alkes as his Heliacal Rising star - here is his full paran list from Starlight - these are sorted by paran thus into the periods of his life.

Note - 1) Facies on the angle at the moment of birth and 2) Castor with his Sun… but there are many star parans that are interesting to consider.
